ASCHIANA is the Lead Agency for promoting and developing
Children's Development Bank in Afghanistan. ASCHIANA
was established in 1995 and has operated continuously,
through the conflict and turmoil that has been present
in Kabul. The name ASCHIANA means "the nest"
and it is a canter that provides refuge for children
working or begging on the street. There are a total
of 6 canters around Kabul city coupled with an educational
outreach service that operates in the camps of internally
displaced people around Kabul. In addition ASCHIANA
operates a vocational training canter in Maza I Shariff.
Currently ASCHIANA provides services to around 4000
and their families.
Aschiana's Mission
Aschiana will create a safe, healthy and stimulating
learning and recreational environment that provides
street working children with opportunities to become
happy, productive and responsible citizens of Afghanisatan.
Aschiana is commited to supporting human rights, the
rights of the child and equal opportunities for girls
and women. Aschiana will be a centre where the Islamic
faith is an integral part of learning and community
life

Thrust Areas for the Organisation

Basic Education
On entry to the program children educational level is
assessed and students are placed into a class based on
their current ability. Current programming encompasses
Dari, Pashto, Numeracy and Religion.

Life Skills
ASCHIANA takes a holistic approach to educational
delivery and incorporates life skills programming, to
assist in the development of the children. Current
programming encompasses Physical Education, Health,
Land Mine Awareness, Traffic Training, Peace
Education, Personal Development and Design and
Technology.

Vocational Training
In order to provide a sustainable livelihood for youth
ASCHIANA provides vocational training opportunities in
the areas of Tailoring, Bicycle Repair, Hairdressing
and Beauty Therapy, Carpentry, Electrical Repair,
Masonry, Welding, Information Technology, Cooking,
Traditional Instrument Making and Plumbing.

Child Abuse Prevention Strategies and
Education
To work towards meaningful change in the lives of
children ASCHIANA staff work with the family members
of students to educate people about the effects of
child abuse and neglect. The staff collaborates with
the families to develop alternate strategies in areas
such as behaviour management to provide tangible
solutions.

Psycho Social
ASCHIANA provides an enrichment and therapeutic
service, by utilising art, drama, music, dance and
storytelling enabling children to have the opportunity
to develop their own unique voice with which to
express themselves. ASCHIANA is a safe space is for
children to explore their own personal experiences,
allowing them to come to terms with the traumatic
events that they have experienced.
