This
Quarterly e-newsletter is meant for people who are committed
to the cause of children within the Right’s perspective.
This is mainly to focus on one of the initiative of
BUTTERFLIES, an organization implementing a Programme
for Street and Working children, called THE CHILDREN’S
DEVELOPMENT BANK.
The
Children’s Development Bank (CDB) is the first bank
initiated and run by the street and working children.
Under the aegis of Butterflies in New Delhi, the CDB
project is being implemented, in South Asian Countries
including India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.
The Lead agencies in each of these countries are Butterflies
in India, Aparajeyo in Bangladesh, Aschiana in Afghanistan,
and Concern in Nepal. The Partner agencies are Secure
Future Project in Jammu & Kashmir, Jeeva Jyoti in
Chennai (Tamil Nadu)., Mayurbhanj Joint Citizen Center
in Kolkata (West Bengal) and Mahila Development Center
in Mujaffarpur (Bihar).

Some
Facts on CDB Members
Membership
The CDB
Family across the region (India, Bangladesh, Nepal
and Afghanistan) has 2150 members. As many
as 1702 boys and 448 girls from vulnerable communities
are the members.
Highest
number is in Delhi (1111) followed by Afghanistan
(300), Kolkata (283) and Bangladesh (214)
Familial
support
Out
of these, about 75% boys and 41% girls do not
have/live with families
Participation
in Education
88% of these boys and 48% of the girls are enrolled
in alternate education programme run by the NGOs
who are implementing the CDB project in their
operational areas

CDB
family extends to Leh (Ladakh region in Jammu & Kashmir)
Leh Nutrition Project in Leh has joined hands with
Butterflies to implement the Bal Vikas Bank (CDB)
in Leh. An MOU was signed with the partner NGO and
Butterflies on December 2nd 2004. The CDB is going
to be formally launched in Leh on December 20th
2004. |

Training
Workshop on Leadership and Children’s participation
for Butterflies BVB members
In
order to inculcate leadership qualities amongst
BVB children in Butterflies programme, an inhouse
training on leadership was organized for 2 days
in Delhi from November 20th - 21st 2004, in which
around 28 children (Bank managers, promoters)
participated.

Bangladesh
surging ahead in CDB
Butterflies
trip to Dhaka in October 2004 revealed the children’s
immense interest in CDB. There are now 214 CDB members
(52 girls and 162 boys) in 8 banks established by
Aparajeyo, with a deposit of approximately Rs 37,000.
All the children are attached to the alternate education
programme. Every CDB has at least 1 girl as the
manager of CDB and the confidence level of these
girls is immense.

Children’s
Participation in CDB Kolkata
A
visit by Butterflies to Kolkata CDB project in
October 2004 captured children’s participation
in CDB activities. For 283 members (120 girls
and 163 boys), mostly street children or belonging
to very poor families, and majority from minority
community, CDB is a key to their development and
a means to achieve their dreams.

Children’s
trip to HSBC Branch located in Barakhamba Road
New Delhi
Strengthening
CDB-HSBC partnership, an exposure visit of the
BVB team of Butterflies comprising of 20 CDB managers
and members, has been organized on December 13th
to a main branch of HSBC located in Barakhamba
road, New Delhi. The objective of the visit is
to organize for children, hands on experience
on the actual functioning of an adult bank. The
exposure visit will include one-hour session on
banking principles followed by an interaction
with the Regional Head of HSBC, Ms Nancy Dickinson
(Also a member of the Advisory Board of CDB).
